Yeah, Lee DeWyze’s post-” American Idol ” single and tour were greeted with a collective cultural yawn and the reigning “Idol” looked destined for the Taylor Hicks House of Low-Level Stardom.
But DeWyze is a scrapper and “Live It Up” ( RCA ) shows it. He crafted the best post-”Idol” debut since Carrie Underwood by playing to his strengths and knowing where he could fit into the pop landscape. The grand, piano-driven ” Brooklyn Bridge ” and catchy ” Earth Stood Still” cast him as an earnest John Mayer . The lovely ballad “Beautiful Like You” is like a fired-up version of The Fray . The title track is part laid-back Jack Johnson, part playful Jason Mraz.
His only misstep turns out to be the first single, “Sweet Serendipity” – an upbeat but bland cousin to Kris Allen / The Script ‘s overstuffed “Live Like We’re Dying” that feels more like a record label ploy than an artistic choice. They’d be better off letting Lee be Lee.

Fans were treated to a very special performance from Lee DeWyze at the P.C. Richard & Son Theater last night! Lee put on a very powerful performance and debuted brand-new songs off his new album, Live It Up. I went behind the scenes with the Sony Bloggie Touch camera/camcorder to show you the entire production from the start!
Fans were lined up outside 32 Avenue of the Americas from before I got there. Lee mentioned during his performance how touched he was to see the fans standing outside so early; by the time he had arrived at the theater four hours before the show, even more fans had shown up. Here are some shots of the crowd gathering outside before check-in: read more here

“Live It Up” Lyrics
Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh
Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh
La da da da da da d
Uhmmm…
You walk on by
Don’t blink an eye
It’s kinda funny
Got me wonderin’ why
Maybe I’m just not your type
Or maybe I’m your Mr. Right
I can be your Romeo
You could be my Juliet
Maybe I’m the one that you’ll never forget
I know that I’m just passing through
But I might stay for you

When “American Idol” champ Lee DeWyze releases his new album “Live It Up” on November 16, a good many people are going to realize just how deep of a connection the singer / songwriter has to his hometown of Chicago.
So did all of these references to the city is music come out of some deliberate attempt to showcase his adoration? Lee explaisn to Beatweek Magazine that it actually came more out of an inherent love that just so happened to bleed through his words:
“The Chicago references were not planned necessarily. It was more like I was writing about it and that’s where these things happened. Sometimes it’s easier to get an understanding of a song when put in that setting.
“All the songs are written from a very honest place. It’s me. Like in ‘Dear Isabel,’ the Lake Michigan reference, or in ‘Me And My Jealousy,’ ‘Chicago in the winter.’ If you’ve ever lived in Chicago, anyone who has, they know what a winter in Chicago is like. To be going through a tough time here in the winter would be just be all the more worse.”
Lee’s current single “Sweet Serendipity” is currently working its way up the radio charts — though its references to Chicago are minimal, the song still has an approach that residents of that city can relate to along with everyone else.

With upcoming appearances on shows like Live! With Regis & Kelly and The Today Show, Lee DeWyze needs a band. And last season’s American Idol winner is in rehearsals this week with the four musicians who’ll join him there.
“We have a really good chemistry,” says Lee, who’ll release his Live It Up album Nov. 16. “They’re all into the music. They all love the music we’re doing, and that makes things even better for me.”
The group includes keyboardist Lincoln Cleary, who accompanied Lee at Chicago’s Arlington Park concert in September.
“I was really glad that we got to keep him and work with him,” Lee says. “He’s unbelievable. He can play anything.”
Chris Wrate, who has previously backed Filipino singer Charice, is the band’s guitarist.
