Their engagement was right out of a fairytale — he popped the question on a private yacht under a fireworks-filled sky at Disney World — and the engagement ring Lee DeWyze gave to girlfriend Jonna Walsh has its own whimsical story, too.
“I knew Jonna was a fan of Phantom of the Opera, and the ring in the play,” DeWyze tells PEOPLE of a circle-cut engagement ring seen in the musical. “I went looking for one that was similar and I found one — the Tiffany Embrace ring — that was perfect.” (Read more)

Lee DeWyze, the 2010 winner of American Idol, has some more great news to celebrate.
The singer, 25, is engaged to model/actress Jonna Walsh, he tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“I’m excited,” says DeWyze, who popped the question July 16 over champagne on a private yacht under a fireworks-filled sky at Disney World in Orlando. The couple are planning to wed in the fall of 2012.
“Jonna is a Disney freak,” he says. “They were playing love songs on the boat and I got down on my knee and asked her. I had a speech prepared but it all went out the window so I just asked her. She started crying and I said, ‘Is that a yes?’” (Read more)

It was only the third gig of Lee DeWyze’s first solo tour. The “American Idol” from 2010 seemed comfortable enough onstage at the Varsity Theater Wednesday — except for his patter, which I explained in my review.
He’s been gigging in Chicago area clubs for several years. In fact, his repertoire included a few selections from his two pre-”Idol” indie albums, 2007’s “So I’m Told” and 2010’ “Slumberland,” and only six numbers from his current slow-selling disc, “Live It Up.”
The sparse audience included couples of varying ages, young women (and girls) with their moms, and clusters of gal pals.DeWyze often expressed his love for his fans and promised to return soon. He mentioned “Idol” only once by name — and once referred to it as “that craziness.”
Here is DeWyze’s set list from the Varsity:
Earth Stood Still/ Dear Isabelle/ Sweet Serendipity > snippet of Fast Car (Tracy Chapman) / Live It Up/ Naked as We Can (Iron & Wine)/ Princess/ Pretty Eyes/ Annabelle/ Stay/ Use Somebody (Kings of Leon)/ Only Dreaming/ Beautiful Like You? Brooklyn Bridge ENCORE Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)

Inspired to help put an end to hunger, Jennifer Harding, a Reading, Pennsylvania based artist, and a big fan of Lee, has created a t-shirt using her painting “Sweet Sweet” (based on a pre-Idol Lee song) to help make a difference in the lives of the hungry. That was the advice reigning American Idol winner Leon James “Lee” DeWyze Jr had for youngsters today.
The 25-year-old American singer-songwriter from Mount Prospect, Illinois, never finished high school, reportedly due to too many unserved detention hours.
While he never graduated, he did eventually return to his studies, obtaining his GED (a high school equivalency diploma).
“It’s hard when you’re young and you want to be a rock star or a baseball player,” said DeWyze during his promotional stopover here. (Read more)

Hunger sucks, so painter Jennifer Harding and Wuli Records are fighting to help end hunger with the sale of special limited-edition t-shirts using Jennifer’s painting, “Sweet Sweet.” The painting is an adaptation of the lyrics of Lee DeWyze’s song of the same name, which appears on his album Slumberland, released by Wuli Records in 2010. The t-shirt can be purchased here.
The t-shirt is designed to help make a difference in the lives of thousands of hungry children, seniors and low-income families stricken by poverty. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these limited edition t-shirts will go directly to Feeding America and the Greater Berks Food Bank. As an additional thank you, buyers will receive a link for a one-time free download of the track “Sweet Sweet” as a gift from Wuli Records.
Artist Jennifer Harding is known for her Lee DeWyze inspired art. You can learn more about her here.

Taipei, May 10 (CNA) “American Idol” winner Lee DeWyze said Tuesday that Taiwan’s TV shows are “crazy,” after he took part in one on the first day of his visit to the country.
Asked about the difference between American and Taiwanese variety shows, the star from the U.S. talent show said “here it’s just more crazy.”
DeWyze, who is in Taiwan on the third leg of his first Asian tour, said he was entertained by the casual and straightforward interviewing style of the hosts and guests on the Taiwan TV show. (Read more)

MANILA, Philippines – At a time when Auto-Tune and discotheque beats rule, “American Idol” Season 9 champ Lee DeWyze remains focused on creating music that, as he puts it, will “go beyond something one can dance to at a club.”
What may well prove his serious commitment as singer-songwriter is his major label debut, “Live It Up,” released last year, in which he wrote 10 out of the 11 songs. As for covers, like those he did back in his “Idol” days, Lee said he made sure he interpreted them his own way, “almost as if I’ve written them.”
Releasing original material was a risk for Lee, telling Bulletin Entertainment and other reporters during his Manila press conference, that “it’s almost like people would get the sense that, ‘Who do you think you are that you’re writing your own songs?’” He took a shot and aimed for originality, nonetheless; acknowledging that an artist will always get judged anyway, whether he is on the “Idol” stage or his own concert platform. It is said that Lee Dewyze won the hearts of millions of viewers of American Idol (2010 edition) with his “rough-hewn voice and laid-back Midwestern charm,” even if he was already an accomplished singer, guitarist and songwriter who already enjoyed a following on the Chicago club scene before he auditioned with over 12,000 others for AI.
“I’m a sucker for hard-edged vocals over pretty melodies and catchy grooves,” Dewyze was quoted in the presskit sent to Funfare by Sony Music which is releasing his debut album, “so that’s what I wanted to do on my album. It shows the flip-side of what I was able to present on Idol because it’s 100 percent me. I’m so proud of it.” (Read more)

It’s been almost one year since former paint salesman Lee DeWyze became the ninth victor of American Idol—and the last winner crowned with crotchety Simon Cowell piloting America’s top-rated TV show.
After DeWyze performed his latest single “Beautiful Like You” for the new panel of Idol judges a few weeks ago, Live It Up returned to the Top 100 albums chart. Currently on a lengthy tour, the 25-year-old Illini spoke with us about his favorite singers from this season, how his life has changed, and what he has to say to those who criticized his season.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You recently performed your new song on Idol. What was it like returning to that stage?
LEE DEWYZE: There was definitely a sense of going back as a musician and not worrying about being judged. I mean you’re always being judged, which is fine, but it was more or less like playing a gig as opposed to trying to be accepted by a panel of judges. Much more relaxed. It wasn’t like whatever song I sang would send me home: I was just there to play and have a good time.
How do you feel about all the changes in your life?
Working a job I love is mentally less stressful than punching in a clock everyday, but it’s a lot busier. There are a lot of things I didn’t worry about before that I do now. It’s sometimes rushed, but I get to wake up and do what I love, so it’s a great change.
Have you been watching the new season?
A little bit. We’ve been on the road a lot lately, but I’ve caught a few episodes, I think the judges are doing a great job. It’s definitely different without Simon Cowell, it’s got a different vibe.
Who are your favorites so far?
I think Pia [Toscano] and Casey Abrams, those would be my two. And I’d throw Haley [Reinhart] in there, I think those three are very talented. But I think they’re all great, it’s going to be good to see what they all do. (Read more)
